Plant Identification

Understand botanical taxonomy and gain useful tips for identifying plants on-site.

Do you know the best way to identify plants on site? After a brief history and overview of botanical taxonomy, Romy Rawlings FLI will take you through elements to consider when identifying plants such as the leaves, twigs, soil type, climate conditions, location and aspect.

Running through several examples, a range of techniques will be explored to illustrate the typical skills required by landscape practitioners, with reference to the LI’s Competency Framework and the Planting & Horticulture competency.

The session will end with a practical identification of plants gathered earlier in the day – as this will be in mid-January it will present a particularly interesting challenge.

Helpful resources for ongoing learning will also be highlighted, including websites, training, and apps.
