6. Keynote – what is the meaning of landscape?

What does Marian Spain, Chief Executive of Natural England, honestly think about what landscape actually means? Is it the wildlife around us? The beauty we see? The ways we interact with our environment? What is the role of landscape professionals in all this? How can the landscape professions help meet the challenges of the climate and biodiversity emergency?

Marian Spain

Marian Spain is Chief Executive of Natural England. Prior to this she was Chief Executive of Plantlife International, the UK’s leading wild plant conservation charity. Marian has acted as Secretary of State for the New Forest National Park Authority, been a trustee of the Campaign for National Parks, and was Director of Strategy at the Energy Saving Trust. Marian has also held a number of roles at both the Environment Agency and Countryside Agency.
