LI Webinar: Introduction to the Biodiversity Net Gain Metric 4.0

Summary

Introduction to the Biodiversity Net Gain Metric 4.0 will introduce the Biodiversity Metric 4.0 and its context within Biodiversity Net Gain

Attendees will be given a basic introduction to how to navigate a completed Metric and its outputs.

The session will also highlight checks that are likely to be made at the planning application validation stage by local planning authorities.

Learning outcome

  • Learn how to open and navigate around a completed Metric and to review its outputs
  • Understand the assessment and review process of the Metric that will form part of a planning application once Biodiversity Net Gain is mandatory in November 2023
  • Have an awareness of the Metric checklist to be used at planning application validation

This webinar is accepted as part of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) required to be completed by members. The LI Code of Practice requires members to undertake a minimum of 25 hours of CPD activity each year.

Sam Wilson, Senior Specialist, Natural England



Sam is a Senior Specialist in the team responsible for development and delivery of the Biodiversity Net Gain Metric with a role covering guidance, the metric tools and delivering training on the metric to colleagues.

Formerly an ecological consultant and regional team lead, Sam has previously provided BNG advice to numerous clients across the development sector, as well as producing technical reports and specialising in protected species surveys.

Michael Brightman, Learning and Development Adviser, Natural England



Michael's role in Natural England is to design, create and deliver training on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and the Metric.

By background he is a lecturer in economics and holds a number of associate and visiting lecturer roles at UK universities.

Within Government, thousands of colleagues have received Michael's training over the last year both face-to-face and virtually.

Externally, Michael liaises with institutes and membership organisations about CPD and training on BNG and the Metric for their members.
