Summary
Many of the current principles of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) were devised by Ian McHarg, a landscape architect. They have countless applications within environmental projects – from visual assessments, site analysis and design development to maintenance. Join this webinar to gain insight into how open-source GIS applications can assist with the process of a Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessment, in what way Natural England and LUC will be using GIS to present the data, and how landscapes are both presented and interpreted from digital representations.
Learning Outcomes: This webinar will explore the opportunities and potential challenges of using GIS to present data in a meaningful way. By attending, you will:- Understand the process of BNG Assessment from a mapping / data perspective.
- Gain an awareness of how the Natural England Template can facilitate a BNG assessment.
- Appreciate the common issues integrating CAD data and GIS for a BNG assessment.
- Consider the opportunities for improving mapping processes and data used in BNG assessments.
- Gain an understanding of the NCA project currently being developed by Natural England
- Understand the interplay between landscapes and people using digital data and GIS mapping
Dr. Paul Brindley, Senior Lecturer in Landscape Planning, Department of Landscape Architecture, The University of Sheffield
Dr. Paul is an academic and is a senior lecturer within the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield with over twenty years’ experience of GIS mapping (Geographic Information Science). He have written over 60 academic papers which have been cited over 1,800 times. Work includes the high profile generation of the Rural Urban Classification for England and Wales and also measuring how ‘green’ our city cores are in Great Britain.
Dr. Paul is an experienced researcher - having worked on over 50 funded research projects. Currently, he is the Director of Education within the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield. Dr. Paul is also the Academic Support Editor at the Landscape Research Journal and I regularly review academic journal papers for a number of high-profile journals.
Matt Davies, Director/Consultant, Maplango
Matt has 20+ years’ experience collating, analysing, and presenting spatial data to deliver the actionable information. This informs a wide range of environmental, landscape and built environment projects. Working with consultancies, land managers and governmental organisations, he helps create the spatial evidence base needed to target resource allocation, improve land management, and make informed policy & strategic business decisions. Matt loves to develop GIS-capacity with clients and provides training and support so landscape architects can learn with confidence.
